Discovering Technology

There is an increasing amount of technology that can open up a world of opportunities to people living with sight loss. Technology can help you remain independent, restore confidence, provide opportunities that sight loss appears to take away and it can help keep you in touch with your family and friends.

At Galloway’s, we know that knowing “where to start” can be daunting. We understand that the thought of using technology for things you might not have done for in the past is a scary thought. We are here to help you make the most of the technology available to you, in whatever form that might be. And we know that differs from one person to the next, that’s why the support we offer is on a 1-1 basis – putting you as our priority.

From mainstream products with built in accessibility features, apps that can “see” on your behalf, right through to specially made technology for blind and partially sighted people – there is something that will and can help you.

We are committed to helping you make the most of the technology available. Throughout July and August we have a range of technology events across all four of our sites:

Personalised Support

We understand that you might have specific questions and queries around technology and that’s why we offer 1-1 appointments with our Assistive Technology Co-Coordinator so that you can get the support you need. We can use these appointments to demonstrate what is available from smart phones, computers  right through to specialised software.

We hold 1-1 appointments across our four sights in Preston, Chorley, Morecambe and Southport. To book, please call Andrew on 01772 744148 or email talkingtech@galloways.org.uk

Seeing AI Workshop

Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you. Using an iPhone or iPad, the app can enable you to hear emails, books, menus and time tables. It can recognise people using facial recognition, identify products by scanning bar-codes. It can even identify handwriting, currency and colour.

Our workshops will look at the App in more detail and help you make the most of it.
