Galloway’s Driving Day is set to return!

Galloway’s, is delighted that it’s ever popular Driving Day is set to return on the 11th September after the charity faced huge disappointment earlier this year when it was  forced to cancel the event as the venue operating company went into liquidation.

Galloway’s has offered its Driving Experience Day to local blind and partially sighted people annually for over 15 years and takes over 40 people twice a year.

James Coulton – Activities Co-Ordinator, explained, “We know that driving is one of the things people living with sight loss miss the most, so to be able to offer the opportunity to be able to drive again, or sometimes for the first time, is incredible. We work with a host of driving instructors who donate their time, skills and vehicles to enable us to allow blind and partially sighted people the opportunity to experience something so many of us take for granted on a daily basis”

“We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Three Sisters Race Track in Wigan for many years, who donate the track twice a year at no cost. Earlier this year, 2 days before our planned Driving Day, the track went into liquidation, which left us with no option but to cancel the event. Although Three Sisters are still without long term owners, the staff have managed to reopen the track and are managing to keep going. We were thrilled to receive the news that our September Driving Day can go ahead as planned.”

The charity, who support over 7,000 people visually impaired people have to raise £1million each year to continue providing a range of services to support people through any stage of their sight loss journey, whether that be early reach support, emotional and practical advice, or events such as the Driving Day.

James summarised, “It is an absolutely amazing day, during which local blind and partially sighted people are given the opportunity to actually drive with local driving instructors in their dual controlled cars, and experience the track as passengers with local classic/sports car and motorbike owner drivers. The event will take place on 11th September and costs just £20. Anybody living with sight loss who would like to attend should call 01772 744148 or email me on james.coulton@galloways.org.uk.”
