On January 12th Galloways held the first walk of 2017. The walk was led by our Get Active coordinator, James Coulton, with the help of a few volunteers. The group consisted of 15 people with varying degrees of sight loss along with a few volunteers, we met at a small carpark on Littledale rd, about 5 miles outside of Lancaster city centre, on the edge of the forest of Bowland. The weather was kind to us despite there being forecasts of snow around the country.
The ramble consisted of very quiet moorland road, forest and farm tracks and was approx. 4 miles in length, due to the recent weather conditions this was quite muddy in places, but with the correct footwear everyone managed.
The route starts at the small carpark on Littledale rd and follows the road downhill towards Udale Bridge and the Scout camp before a short uphill section to new house farm. The road then levels off before a slight downhill section past the driveway to Littledale Hall. After passing this turn off the road comes to a sharp uphill hairpin bend where the walk leaves the road and joins a forest track on the right. This track was quite muddy in places and leads past the ruins of Littledale free church and on towards a bridge near Littledale hall farm. We followed the path through the farm yard and out into the woods behind the farm after crossing a footbridge we turned right and up a slight narrow uphill section, where care needs to be taken as there are tree roots and the path is only single track, which leads to a wider path in the woods, where there is an easy to miss path on the left with steps which wind up the hillside for a short distance before leading to a style into the field. We followed the direction of the path across the field which leads to a dry stone wall with steps in the sides to cross into the next field, however just a few meters further there is a gate. The next field leads to a farm track at Field Head. We followed this track which leads downhill past Bellhill farm and back to Udale Bridge. The walk then follows the quiet road back up the steep hill to the carpark. For those that didn’t feel able to walk back up the hill we had 1 of the minibuses come down and pick them up.
Most of the people on the walk said how much they enjoyed the walk and would like to do more of this kind of walking.
One lady said “I love coming on these walks as it is the only time I get to do this and meet other people”.
