Without the support of Volunteers who are willing to give of their time and skills, Galloway's Morecambe would be unable to maintain its level of services and support to some 1400 visually impaired people living in North Lancashire.
How can you help? Perhaps you may be over the age of 25, with a clean driving licence, and would be happy to drive the Society's Minibus. Various groups, holidays and activities are arranged and can involve transport during the day, in an evening or at weekend. All drivers are expected to take the MIDAS Test.
You may prefer to be a Volunteer Reader or Technician in our Recording Studio, based at our Centre on Bahnoral Road in Morecambe, where the Lancaster Citizen and a Sports Tape are recorded weekly, as well as a monthly publication entitled 'Lancashire Lass'.
Alternatively, you could offer your assistance with one of the Society's Social Centres, which are situated in Morecambe, Lancaster and at Over Kellet. Volunteers offer a helping hand to Tutors with the various Interest Groups and Workshops, assisting people in and out of the Centres, the serving of refreshments and accompanying the visually impaired on trips and educational visits.
Many people with poor sight are extremely lonely, live on their own and do not get out very far, and greatly appreciate either a regular visit or phone call from one of our Volunteers, usually on a weekly basis.
Some Volunteers may enjoy the fund raising side of our activities; ranging from Flag Days to Store Collections, Book Sales to Charity Auctions, participating in the Great North Run or walk across Morecainbe Bay, or even manning a stall at our Summer and Christmas Fayres.
From an insurance and security point of view, prospective Volunteers are all asked to complete an application form and to let the Society have the names and addresses of two referees.
