Next month, Nigel Walker, a hotel manager from Morecambe, will take a leap of faith by skydiving from 15,000 feet to raise funds for Galloways; a charity supporting visually impaired people across the North-West.
Born partially sighted, Nigel nearly lost his vision entirely in 2018 due to a head injury while working as a foster carer. Despite this, Nigel and his supportive wife have fostered over 50 children, providing them with a loving and nurturing home.
Nigel's deep connection with Galloways began when he attended the Derby School, which closed in 1987. The charity offered him vital support and connected him with others who were also dealing with sight loss, creating a strong, supportive community.
By skydiving, Nigel aims to give back to the charity that has been instrumental in his life. Reflecting on his journey, Nigel shared, "I honestly don't know where I would be today without the support of Galloways. They have supported me through the darkest times."
The funds raised, already surpassing £2500, will help Galloways continue their vital work. They provide projects, emotional support, and practical advice to help visually impaired people lead independent lives. The charity also organises social events and activities, ensuring that the people remain active and engaged across their communities.
Nigel's skydive, coordinated with the Black Knights Skydiving Centre team in Cockerham on August 7 marks a significant personal achievement for him and emphasises the importance of fostering inclusive communities.
Iain Pearson, CEO of Galloways, commented, "Nigel's story is a testament to the resilience and strength of the human spirit. We are immensely proud of his efforts and grateful for his support. His skydive will raise crucial funds and spread awareness about the challenges and triumphs of visually impaired people."
Nigel's leap of faith is more than just a skydive; it is a powerful message of resilience, showcasing that even in the face of adversity, you can make a significant difference in others' lives
Michelle Hawley, Community Fundraiser at Galloways, expressed her admiration for Nigel's bravery. ‘Nigel's determination is amazing. His skydive not only raises essential funds but helps us highlight the importance of our community supporting sight loss. Our community efforts are crucial in supporting and encouraging visually impaired people to thrive."
