Two visually impaired bowlers from a Preston club who competed in a national tournament returned home with a winners’ trophy.
Chris Turnbull and Steve Dewitt, who are members of Preston & District Blind Bowling Club, competed in the B2 Pairs section of the Visually Impaired Bowls England (VIBE) National Outdoor Singles & Pairs Championships.
The event was held at Weston-Super-Mare on 16 - 21 June.
With nine pairs competing in the B2 section, it was split into two groups. Chris and Steve won all four of their group games to progress to the final. It was a match that Preston were guaranteed to win as Tony Kimpton, the club’s Chairman, and partner Jeanette Maisey from Swindon had finished top of the other group to reach the same final. This was a closely fought match but Chris and Steve took the trophy with a final score of nine shots to six.
Chris and Steve also played in the B2 Men’s Singles competition and both finished second in their respective groups and so just missed out on another final.
Preston & District Blind Bowling Club meets every Thursday afternoon at Moor Park from April to September. New members with any kind of sight loss are always welcome to come along and give bowling a try. The club is also looking for volunteers to act as sighted helpers at meetings.
